Tamil priest, LTTE sympathizer acquitted over Suicide Attack on Gota
Colombo High Court Judge Sampath Abeykoon, acquitted and discharged a Tamil Hindu priest, Ayer Sri Skandaraja Sharma, from all 13 charges in connection with an alleged suicide attempt on the life of the then Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and killing of three soldiers who were providing him with security in December 2006.
Sri Skandaraja Sharma had now been indicted on an alleged confession he had made, but he told the court that he had not made it voluntarily to show it that it was given under duress which is a common excuse used by LTTE Tamil terrorist suspects.
The judge after considering the fact that the prosecuting AG’s Department counsel had informed court that there was no other evidence against the accused and on the submissions made by the defence attorney, acquitted and discharged the accused, who had been in remand custody for nearly 12 years.
Others indicted for conspiring in this case between August 01, 2006 and December 01, 2006 with LTTE suicide bomber Balasigham Wijayakumar, who has since died, are Ponnasamy Karthigesu alias Sivaji, Arulan Pathmanathan, Chandrabose Selvachandran alias Michael and Chelliah Thilayan.
