“The stupid neither forgive nor forget, the naive forgive and forget, the wise forgive but do not forget”
30 Years Since the Fall of Mullaitivu Camp
Today, July 18, marks the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Mullaitivu Army Camp, widely regarded as the second-largest military defeat in the history of the Sri Lanka Army.
Following the successful Operation Riviresa in 1995, which resulted in the loss of the Jaffna Peninsula by the LTTE, the organization launched Operation Oyatha Alaigal (Unceasing Waves) in an effort to regain the initiative. More than 4,000 LTTE fighters attacked the isolated Mullaitivu camp, which had no land supply route.
The battle became one of the darkest chapters in Sri Lanka Army history, with more than 1,400 soldiers losing their lives.
Much has been written and discussed about the Mullaitivu attack through books, interviews, committee reports, and historical accounts. This post, however, seeks to remember another painful aspect of the tragedy. According to numerous accounts, after the camp had fallen, announcements were reportedly made in Sinhala calling on the remaining soldiers to surrender, assuring them that they would be handed over to their families through the International Committee of the Red Cross. It is alleged that many who surrendered were subsequently killed and their bodies burned.
Of the more than 1,400 personnel stationed at the camp, only around sixty managed to escape with their lives.
Reports also state that approximately 400 bodies of fallen soldiers were taken to Kilinochchi and publicly displayed by the LTTE. Many of those who perished were never returned to their families, and numerous soldiers remained listed as missing. Although the camp had fallen within the first few days of the assault, many families did not learn the fate of their loved ones until much later. At the time, information about the incident was heavily restricted.
Even today, for many of those sons, brothers, husbands, and fathers, all that remains is a memorial bearing their names.
This is a chapter of LTTE history that should not be forgotten. While discussions about the conflict often focus on liberation or political aspirations, it is equally important to remember the suffering, loss of life, and alleged atrocities experienced by countless victims.
As we mark 30 years since the Mullaitivu attack, I respectfully remember the more than 1,400 soldiers who lost their lives, together with Colonel Fazly Lafir and the Special Forces personnel who voluntarily took part in the rescue operation and made the ultimate sacrifice.
May they all attain the supreme peace they so richly deserve.
“The stupid neither forgive nor forget, the naive forgive and forget, the wise forgive but do not forget.”
