ENFORCED DISAPPEARANCE BILL PASSED IN BRAECH of presidential assurance – Thera

Ven. Induragare Dhammarathana Thera, on behalf of Mahajana Rajjya Sabhawa, has requested Speaker Karu Jayasuriya not to certify the Bill for the protection against enforced disappearances enacted hastily in Parliament on March 7.
Alleging that the Bill hadn’t been passed properly, the Thera has sought a meeting with Speaker Jayasuriya to discuss the matter.
In a brief letter to Speaker Jayasuriya, Dhammarathana Thera has pointed out that a vote was taken in Parliament in spite of President Maithripala Sirisena’s promise to the Buddhist clergy that the government wouldn’t proceed with it.
The Speaker has also been told that an amendment promised by Foreign Minister Tilak Marapana had not been accommodated.
The monk has also accused the Speaker of not making available copies of the bill in Sinhala, Tamil and English to members of parliament thus depriving them of the opportunity of reading up on the proposed law.
