“The real beneficiary of the Easter attacks is none other than the Cardinal” – Gammanpila
Udaya Gammanpila, leader of Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, says that under Catholic Church law, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith was due to retire as Archbishop of Colombo on Nov 15, 2022, upon turning 75.
However, he alleges the Cardinal has obtained four extensions to his tenure by telling the Vatican that he must remain in office to bring the powerful figures behind the Easter Sunday terror attacks before the law.
Gammanpila argues that if “the party that gains the most from a crime is suspected as the mastermind,” then by that logic, Fr. Cyril Gamini should place the full responsibility for the Easter tragedy on Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith, the actual beneficiary.
Speaking at a media briefing, he said:
“There is a popular conspiracy theory: ‘the beneficiary is the perpetrator’. Using this theory, suspicion over the assassination of U.S. President John F. Kennedy fell on Vice President Lyndon Johnson; suspicion over the assassination of Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike fell on acting PM W. Dahanayake; and suspicion over Upali Wijewardene’s disappearance fell on PM R. Premadasa.
On that same ‘beneficiary = perpetrator’ theory, Fr. Cyril Gamini and others suspect Gotabaya Rajapaksa, claiming he benefited from the Easter attacks and the serious security collapse ahead of the 2019 presidential election.
But we know well that in the 2018 local government election, the Pohottuwa got 42% and the SLFP 14%. So by the time of the presidential election, Gotabaya Rajapaksa already had a 56% vote base with SLFP + Podujana Peramuna support. He had no need to gain from the Easter attacks — he already had more votes than required.
Therefore, by Fr. Cyril Gamini’s own logic, Gotabaya Rajapaksa cannot be called the beneficiary of the Easter attacks. But there is a real beneficiary.
Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith should have retired on Nov 15, 2022 — his 75th birthday. Instead, citing ‘powerful people’ behind the attacks, he has secured four extensions/reloads from the Vatican.
So when you look at it, the real beneficiary of the Easter attacks is none other than the Cardinal. If you believe the ‘beneficiary = perpetrator’ conspiracy theory, then Fr. Cyril Gamini, why don’t you place responsibility for the Easter attacks on the real beneficiary, Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith?”
