Alleged seizure of the Buddha statue in Trincomalee Police heats up

Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thero and other Buddhists arrested — Lawyers tell court the arrest is illegal under the 9th Amendment

The case regarding the Police allegedly taking away the Buddha statue was taken up for hearing today at the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court, where strong legal arguments were raised.

During the hearing, President’s Counsel Nishshanka Krishantha, appearing for Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thero, submitted a special written submission to the court. In it, he emphasized that the arrest of Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thero was completely illegal. He also questioned whether this court even has the legal jurisdiction to hear the case related to this incident.

Meanwhile, the Magistrate also asked whether Dulal Gunathilaka, convener of the Sinhala Organizations United Front, and the other suspects share the same position.

Lawyer Sanjeewa Wijayawickrama, appearing for Dulal Gunathilaka and the other suspects, stated that the other suspects are also acting in line with the position taken by Ven. Balangoda Kassapa Thero.

At the conclusion of the court proceedings, President’s Counsel Nishshanka and Lawyer Sanjeewa Wijayawickrama addressed the media and further clarified the matter.
