Give back Sinhala Vidyalaya to Sinhala children
It is the duty of the Sri Lankan authorities to ensure that no unwarranted problems are caused to Government owned schools by outside elements in any part of the country – including the Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya in Jaffna, where Sinhala students studied prior to the outbreak of LTTE Tamil terrorist war in 1983.
The Tamil National Alliance (TNA), a pro-LTTE terrorist political party which is very keen to oust the Security Forces from private lands in Jaffna have deliberately ignored Tamils encroaching on State land during the Tiger terrorist occupation including land belonging to the Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya in Jaffna.
The adjacent Church to the Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya in Jaffna had encroached by occupying part of the school’s land after 1983 and had established a Tamil Christian school within the Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya premises should vacate it forthwith.

The so-called international community too has turned a blind eye to this, despite the fact that the Government has handed back almost all Tamil schools occupied by the security forces during the war with Tamil terrorists to the Education Ministry for them to return to normalcy except the said Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya in the Jaffna city centre.
At present, children of Sinhala families in Jaffna are compelled to be away from Jaffna for their studies since the only Sinhala School in Jaffna is not functioning. They are now attending schools in Anuradhapura, Mihinthale and in other part in the country. If steps are taken to restart the Sinhala School again after freeing the illegally occupied land by the Church encroachers, it will serve not only the Sinhala IDP families in Jaffna and their children but also the Government employees residing in Jaffna. Encroachers should hand over the illegally occupied parts to the government caretakers, who look after the remaining school land.
It is also the duty of the Government caretaker of the remaining Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya land and the building to take steps to retake the land taken by the Church encroachers and to restore the Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya to its former glory and make way for the Sinhala students from the families who survived the LTTE terrorists’s rule and the children of present Sinhala IDP in Jaffna in Navakkuliya to study with honour and dignity thereby preserving the Sinhala language and their identity in Jaffna.
The Sinhala identity has been eroded seriously in the Jaffna district due to Tamil terrorist occupation during the period between 1983 – 2009, which now continue under separatist TNA rule under provincial powers devolved under the 13th Amendment to the Constitution.
