Pitfalls facing the Common Candidate

By Janaka Perera

One of the major issues which have caused concern to Sri Lanka’s patriots is whether the country will be unitary or united in the event the Opposition’s common candidate Maithripala Sirisena wins. It is obvious that the JHU (which has signed a separate agreement with the Sirisena) is holding views completely opposed to some of the others in the anti-Rajapaksa alliance on this matter.

Former President Chandrika Kumaratunga who appears to be the mastermind behind this whole exercise has been already talking of a ‘United Sri Lanka’ instead of a “Unitary” country.  She was first the Head of State who wanted give the North and East to the LTTE for 10 years as an ‘experiment.’  We have not forgotten how she almost agreed to the P-TOMS plan after the Tsunami of 2004 for allowing the LTTE to control even the North Eastern territorial waters.

A so-called United Sri Lanka means fully implementing the “13th Amendment” paving the way for a virtual separate State in the North and East two provinces, through the granting of police and land powers.  How is the new Government if ever it is formed, going to deal with the TNA and Western pressure to devolve powers to the predominantly Tamil areas?

The latest to express support for the Common Candidate is Nawa Sama Samaja Party Leader Vickremabahu Karunaratne. We all know well his pro-LTTE politics. This traitor, who almost shed tears over the deaths of Tiger cadres at a ceremony in London soon after the war, is still calling the anti-LTTE military campaign “a campaign of genocide against the Tamil people.”! Those like Rajitha Senaratne are not very different. We know how he demanded along with assorted NGO peaceniks that the war be stopped,  before he became a Minister in the UPFA Government.  He is all out to implement the 13-A if given the opportunity.

What about Kumaran Pathmanathan (KP) and his funds?  He is likely to attempt fleeing the country, perhaps along with Kaurana Amman, who is believed to be the brains behind the attack on the Sri Dalada Maligaawa and the killing of 600 unarmed policemen.  Will KP’s funds go into the hands of pro-LTTE Tamil Diaspora? The possibility cannot be ruled out.

Ranil Wickremesinghe might agree to any of these situations. After all he is the ex-Prime Minister who quite willingly signed the ‘ceasefire’ with Prabhakaran, allowing him to control the entire north and east.

These are the possible pitfalls facing Maithripala Sirisena if he wins.
