Mithreepala for Pro-LTTE 13A?

The Presidential common candidate Mr. Mithreepala Sirisena was responding to an interview with pro-LTTE and anti-Sri Lankan BBC’s Sandeshaya service that he would hold the constitutional powers required to rein in Provincial Councils which are coming under the infamous 13th Amendment to the Sri Lankan constitution enacted by India by force in 1987 to create a separate state for LTTE backed Tamils in the North and East of two provinces. Maithripala Sirisena admitted that by abolition of the executive powers pertaining to the 13th Amendment would automatically lead to the creation of nine governments in the country which leads to create a Federal State that is being promoted by UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe and former president Chandrika Bandaranayake. The pro-LTTE Tamil political party TNA and India are also promoting to the concept of United Sri Lanka deviating from the current Unitary status of the country. Abolition of such executive powers would empower Provincial Councils, the former SLFP General Secretary surrounded by anti-Sri Lankan lobby said to BBC.

Sources said that Maithripala Sirisena’s statements reflected the utter confusion as regards far reaching constitutional changes envisaged in case he won the presidency. It was pointed out that Maithripala Sirisena had also declared that in accordance with the powers vested in the presidency, he would be the Commander-in-Chief of the armed forces, therefore responsible for national security.
