Petitions challenging 19A before SC tomorrow
The petitions filed by eight persons challenging the constitutionality of the proposed 19th Amendment to the Constitution will be called before the Supreme Court on 1st of April 2015.
The petitioners are Attorney-at-Law Gomin Dayasri, leader of Pivithuru Hela Urumaya Attorney-at-Law Udaya Gammanpila, L. P. I Perera and five others.
They have said the proposed amendment violates people’s right to franchise and needs to be passed by a two third majority in parliament and approved by the people at a referendum. If the amendment is enacted Parliament can be dissolved only after four and a half years, and not after one year, if necessary.
The petitions will be called before Chief Justice K. Sripavan appointed by Ranil, who grab the Prime Minister post without facing any election and two other judges of the Supreme Court.
