Joint Opposition urged to oppose constitution making process
The Federation of national Organisations yesterday said the Joint Opposition should oppose the government efforts to make a new Constitution at the behest of the US and its alles to please the pro-LTTE Tamil terrorists elements.
Chairman of the Federation, Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekera, addressing the media at Dr. N. M. Perera Centre, said the government was in a hurry to introduce a new Constitution to appease the West.
He called upon the Joint Opposition members not to be a party to the Constitution making process.
“The motive of the government is to bring in a new constitution and thereafter implement the 13th Amendment fully paving the way for secession,” he said.
Dr. Amarasekera said the government was subservient to the US and some other western countries.
Leading Human Rights lawyer Kalyananda Thiranagama said: ‘No patriot can endorse amendments to the present constitution and the government has plans to repeal the Prevention of Terrorism Act.” He added that some suspects charged with petty crimes were languishing in jail for years while hardcore criminals and those charged with acts of Tamil terrorism got away with their crimes.
Dr. Wasantha Bandara said the government was doing as India said, noting that some some Joint Opposition members elected on the UPFA ticket at the last general election had joined the government for personal gains. “They cannot go back to their electorates and face the people who voted for them.”
It is widely believe that the government is manipulating the constitution to form Federal States in Sri Lanka in line with the demand of US, EU and India and to align with pre-election pact with pro-Tamil terrorists political party TNA.
