Permission to Indian Fishermen – Tamils protest in Jaffna

Fishermen in the Northern Province hold a protest today in front of the Northern Provincial Council (NPC) against the Yahapalanaya government’s plans to allow Indian fishermen to fishing in Northern Sri Lanka sea and demanding a permanent solution to poaching by government sponsored Indian Fishermen.

Indian fishermen were using illegal fishing methods such as bottom trawling. This method is banned in Sri Lanka. Indians are carrying out an internationally prohibited method of fishing within the Sri Lankan waters.

Indian backed Yahapalanaya government lead by Ranil and Sirisena in discussion with Indian proposal that Indian fishermen be permitted to engage in fishing in Sri Lankan waters for 75 days of the year. However, both Southern and Northern fishermen and politicians are objecting to this proposal which is grossly violating Sri Lankan fishermen’s rights.
