Request for the Removal of Police, Land, and Financial Powers from the 13th Amendment

The nationalist political party Sinhaladeepa Jathika Peramuna (SJP) has issued an open letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, formally requesting the removal of police, land, and financial powers from the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka.

In the letter, the SJP emphasizes that the President’s party made significant sacrifices—losing over 60,000 youth—in opposition to the 13th Amendment and the Provincial Council system introduced under Indian influence in 1987. The SJP argues that, given the current government’s two-thirds majority in Parliament, the administration has both the authority and the obligation to amend this provision, which they contend was imposed on Sri Lanka by external forces of India.
