The Al Jazeera Assault on Sri Lanka’s Former President: A Manufactured Narrative and the Role of Local Digital Media

The names Ranil Wickremesinghe and Al Jazeera have become inextricably linked in a recent, disgraceful episode of international media bias. What should have been an opportunity for a fair and balanced discourse was, instead, a calculated and orchestrated attack on a prominent Sri Lankan leader. Al Jazeera, a Qatar-based international news agency, once again flexed its editorial muscle to selectively cut and manipulate an interview in order to push a narrative that distorts reality and undermines the truth. But this attack doesn’t end with Al Jazeera—there is a clear and troubling continuation of this smear campaign by local digital media networks, most likely funded and incentivized to change the narrative about Sri Lanka’s recent history.

Al Jazeera’s Prejudiced Interview and the Ongoing Media War

During the infamous Head-to-Head interview, Mehdi Hasan and his panel engaged in what can only be described as a blatant, unprofessional attempt to discredit former President Ranil Wickremesinghe. Rather than seeking honest answers to critical questions regarding Sri Lanka’s national crises, such as the Easter Sunday attacks and the country’s ongoing economic turmoil, they attempted to twist his words, using biased questioning and selective editing to push a politically motivated agenda. The claim that Wickremesinghe “missed” the interview is pure manipulation designed to mislead the public and diminish his credibility. This interview was not an innocent exchange; it was a deliberate strategy to undermine one of Sri Lanka’s most experienced leaders.

Al Jazeera’s coverage of the former president was not about journalism; it was about propaganda. Their selective editing and aggressive framing of the conversation ignored the larger context of Sri Lanka’s challenges. Questions were designed not to elicit truth, but to corner the president and craft a narrative that suited their geopolitical agenda. Al Jazeera’s manipulation of the facts and omission of key information has created a distorted view of Sri Lanka’s leadership and history, and this cannot be tolerated.

Local Digital Media Networks: The New Front of the Propaganda War

The international assault led by Al Jazeera is only one piece of the puzzle. Locally, digital media networks—most likely paid for the task—are continuing the smear campaign against Ranil Wickremesinghe. These platforms are now amplifying the narrative set in motion by Al Jazeera, spreading misinformation and manipulating the facts to sway public opinion. These local outlets, many of which are politically aligned with opposing factions, are deliberately altering the course of Sri Lanka’s history, attempting to rewrite what happened during the Easter Sunday attacks and the aftermath of the economic crisis.

This is not a coincidence. It is part of a carefully planned operation to delegitimize the leadership of Ranil Wickremesinghe and obscure the truth. The goal is clear: to change the public’s perception and erase the hard work done to address the country’s challenges. The truth is inconvenient for those pushing this agenda, and they are willing to stop at nothing to obscure it.

The Fight for Truth: Sri Lanka Deserves Clarity, Not Attacks

Sri Lanka deserves answers on the Easter Sunday attacks. This is a matter of national security, justice, and the integrity of our country. The investigations into the attacks are ongoing, and instead of launching baseless attacks on the former president, we need to allow the truth to unfold through proper channels. The media should not be weaponized to create false narratives or to attack those who are working tirelessly to bring justice.

The people of Sri Lanka must stand united against this continuous smear campaign. The voices that seek to rewrite history, distort facts, and undermine our leaders must be challenged. We will not allow this injustice to go unanswered. Sri Lanka’s history, especially regarding Ranil Wickremesinghe’s role in the country’s critical moments, deserves to be remembered truthfully, not through the lens of foreign manipulation and local media’s paid agendas.

This isn’t just an issue of defending Ranil Wickremesinghe; it’s about defending the integrity of Sri Lanka’s future. The assault from Al Jazeera and its continuation by local digital networks represents a direct attack on the sovereignty of our nation and its leadership. We must demand honest, transparent reporting and call out the false narratives being pushed. It’s time for us, as a united people, to rise above the propaganda and defend the truth.

We are powerful, and we will not allow anyone—whether foreign media networks or local propagandists—to manipulate our history, our leaders, or our future. Sri Lanka will stand strong in the face of these attacks, and we will fight for our right to the truth.
