Dayan Jayatilleke’s tears for mother Lanka

Dr. Dayan Jayatilleke is writing to Colombo Telegraph as if his rear-end is on fire. On Jan 28, he wrote about his friend Lalith W’s wrong strategy in Geneva and America. On Jan 30, he is warning Wigneswaran (W) for trying to divide Sri Lanka (by passing a resolution asking for a war crimes inquiry by UN). Was that not Dayan was behind all these years? One comment said Dayan was shedding crocodile tears. Dayan (D) must be happiest man in Sri Lanka, because he was able to get President MR into a well during day time, which other presidents did not fall in the night not due to their wisdom, but because the country’s horoscope was good. If there is any aspect of this Wigneswaran drama that one can think troubling Dayan, it is the acceleration of W’s Eelam march. DJ wants W to take time and not to rush.
How can anybody complain about what W is doing? He is doing exactly what he said he would do. What did he say?
1. he did not accept the constitution;
2. he did not accept 13-A or 13A plus;
3. he wanted right to self-determination without or with foreign help;
4. he said Prabhakaran was no. one Tamil hero
5. he said GOSL was nearly genocidal
D knew all this before the NPC election. MR also knew these. Still they went ahead and gave the election. No land re-captured from a terrorist organization is given an election, because the ballot box becomes the new bomb to be used against the enemy. That is human nature. So both MR and D are getting back what they had asked for. MR must be biting the bullet, but D is trying to be too smart with rapid fire of letters to Colombo Telegraph. Who is he trying to cheat?
We know W is doing what he planned to do.
1. he says withdraw the army
2. remove the governor
3. remove chief secretary
4. allow war memorials for the dead (Prabhakaran)
5. allow UN-based war crimes investigation
In this situation there is very little MR can do. He is trapped. He will have to eat his constitution because he said he has to follow the constitution and grant NPC election. Was that not D also proposed and wanted and got?
D is joking with Hitler’s Nazi Germans and Japan’s demands on Hiroshima. Gotabhaya and the Hasalaka Hero rescued the country and MR ruined it. MR got trapped by the American plan. MR became an Interfaith, Multi-cultural fan. Mismanagement will soon make Sri Lanka a failed state. There is still time to reverse the slippery path taken. He must realize that the yes men around him made him an emperor without clothe.
After March whether America win or lose, a new stage will begin. There will be agitations all over North asking this right or that right, a cemetery there or a statute here. It will like the Satyagraha days of Naganathan in the 1950s and 1960s. Opposition jokers in the south will begin their trouble-making. Any shooting will be international news. Unlike Vartharaja W will not run to Madras, because W went to election against the constitution that allowed him to contest the election. Nowhere in the world have we seen such strange phenomenon. Still MR and even UNP’s Wijedasa cannot fathom this! There will not be a legality issue. There will be a people power issue. That is, if Tamils want a certain right in their area (homeland?) can Colombo stop it?
Instead of Divi Neguma he should have implemented the Jana Sabha concept, think of empowering people and remove the evil triangle –politician, officer, NGO—exploiting masses. Two six year terms was more than sufficient for one man and he should have thought like a benevolent dictatorship-like system, use army for development and get a new constitution for the people, remove corrupt electoral system etc. But with the cabinet-level corruption, indiscipline no punishment for violation of law, people will not support Singapore or Malaysia like strict rule. People in Sri Lanka are so used to corruption that they need Prabhakaran black cat kind of JVP 1971 and 1988-9 kind of motivation. Under democracy nothing can be done. Teachers do not teach, but go home early for their home tuition class. Doctors do for private practice neglecting hospital duty, No discipline on roads, police take bribes, and government office clerks are on cell phones all the time. This kind of mess cannot be corrected by democracy. But it also needs dedicated honest political leaders. Ven. Gangodawila Soma demonstrated that people can be disciplined by words and example, need not be via the gun.
Clever manipulation of the JRJ bahubootha thing and hi-jacking people’s rights cannot go on forever. UNP, JVP, Sarath F, Chandrika, Ven. Maduluwave S all can get together but they cannot win. People have no faith in them separately or as a collective. This situation should be used to help the country and not to continue the same old path with buying more and more UNP members. Otherwise people like Dayan will shed crocodile tears until the ship sinks and the country become another Lebanon.
