ANANDA COLLEGE DEFEAT RICHMOND COLLEGE TO LIFT THE THIRD MURALI HARMONY CUP
The Murali Harmony Cup is a reconciliation cricket tournament that promotes unity, goodwill, teamwork, the spirit of fair play and service to disadvantaged rural communities in post-war Sri Lanka. Preliminary round matches were played in Jaffna, Kilinochchi and Mullative and the Grand Final matches of male and female were conducted at the Jaffna Central College grounds, Jaffa.
Security Forces Jaffna, under the directions and supervision of Security Force Commander Major General Udaya Perera immensely supported the tournament organizers in organizing the grand finals of Murali Harmony Cup in Jaffna.
Ananda College crushed Richmond College by five wickets in a one-sided low-scoring final to become the third Murali Harmony Cup champions on Sunday.
Ananda College knocked out defending champions St. Peter’s College in the semi-finals, ending their three-year winning run, before dominating their Galle opponents in Jaffna.
Richmond College were bowled out for just 68 in 18.5 overs with Kaveeshka Anjula, the man of the match in the semi-finals, taking 3 for 13 with the new ball.
All-rounder Sahan Arachchige also chipped in with great figures, taking 4 for 15 from his four overs.
In reply Ananda College had a nervous start losing two wickets in the first over, but middle order batsman Asel Sigera steadied the innings with 39 from 51 runs.
In the ladies competition FOG Seenigama won their first Murali Harmony Cup, defeating Badulla Ladies in comprehensive and colourful style by 48 runs.
FOG Seenigama scored 93 for 4 in their 15 overs with Dharshani Mendis top-scoring with 26 from 24 balls. Badulla Ladies were never in the hunt as wickets fell at regular intervals.
A large number of spectators gathered at Jaffna Central College grounds to witness the finals. A special event of awarding scholarships for the University Students, organized by Security Force Jaffna, also took place in parallel. 20 scholarships were awarded to the university students of Jaffna allowing them to receive Rs 3000.00 monthly allowance for their studies covering the entire period of for their university education.
During the LTTE Tamil terrorism period no sports were allowed to play to children in Northern province but we there were forcefully taken to LTTE battle front. No UN, NGO, and TNA raise any objection to LTTE at that time until security forces liberated Tamil people from LTTE terrorism.
