Petitions SC over Vandalising of Buddhist worship Places in North and East
Attorney-at-law N. Dharshana Weraduwa of Athurugiriya has filed a petition in the Supreme Court requesting the court to direct respondents Sagala Ratnayake, the Minister of Law and Order, Dr. Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe, the Minister of Buddha Sasana and Justice and Reginald Cooray, the Governor of the Northern Province to take immediate action to secure, protect and safeguard places of Buddhist worship, statues and items of Archaeological interest in the Northern and Eastern two Provinces where a Tamil and a Muslim serve as Chief Minister. It is learnt that both Chief Ministers are extremists separatists while Northern Chief Minister, Vingeshwarn is a hard core pro-LTTE Tamil terrorists supported by Tamil terrorist diaspora.
The petitioner has said places of worship were at serious risk of being vandalised.
Buddhism was given the foremast place under Article 9 of the Constitution of Sri Lanka. Hence the state was duty bound to protect this religion of the majority, he has contended.
Among the respondents are the Attorney General, the Chief Minister of the North, C. V. Wigneswaran, the Minister of Law and Order, the Minister of Buddha Sasana, the Governor of the Northern Province and the Attorney General, for the President.
The pro-minority Government lead by federalist Ranil and Sirisena has not taken any effective measures to protect such Buddhists places; contrary the pro-minority government are trying to dilute the foremost position of Buddhism in Sri Lanka by constitutionally.
