Bar Association frowns on method of ratifying pro-Minority PC polls Bill by Yahapalana
The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) yesterday frowned on the manner in which the government had secured the passage of the Provincial Council Elections (Amendment) Bill in Parliament last week. It was passed in most irregular manner and in favour of minority ethnics by giving 50/50 opportunity on PC polls system.
President of BASL U. R. de Silva told a media in Colombo that the due process had to be followed when Bills were passed. He said the government had adopted methods in contravention of the due process and they would have an adverse impact on the rule of law.
The legislature, the executive and the judiciary should act as independent institutions, De Silva said.
De Silva said the BASL did not have any political agenda and it would proceed to act on the issue in the national interest.
The BASL President said his association intended to discuss the issue with so-called Yahapalana President Maithripala Sirisena and pro-minority Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in the future and it hoped to provide legal advice on the matter.
