Common Oppn. Condemns PM’s Attack on Journalists and Complained to International Body
The spokesman of the common opposition Dullas Alahapperuma yesterday said President Maithripala Sirisena, the Free Media Movement, Western countries and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party should reveal their position over the statement made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe in Parliament with regard to the conduct of some journalists and media organisations.
“The members of the common opposition condemn this statement. It is an attempt to intimidate and frighten the journalists,” he said.
Alahapperuma said the statement made by the Prime Minister in Parliament over the conduct of journalists and media institutions is a disgrace to his father and grandfather who left an indelible imprint in the history of the country’s media sector.
“The Prime Minister who pioneered in bringing the Right to Information Bill is in the habit of terrorizing media personnel,” he said.
The behavior of federalist mind-set Ranil inside the parliament has been criticized by locally and internationally. Some members of the parliament have written to the Organization of International Parliament about the violent, dictatorship and unethical behavior of Sri Lankan Prime Minister. Once he called some Opposition members as monkey and recently he shouted at the journalist in the public gallery of the parliament and called some journalists and frog and devils so on to professional journalists like Mr. Keerthi Warnakulasooriya and Chathura in Derena TV.
Further, Ranil is notoriously famous in missusing the parliament time allocated to the each party and MPs.
