Demand For Separate Tamil and Muslim Province in Sri Lanka By TNA and SLMC

Following SLMC demand for separate state for Muslims in the Easter province Trincomalee-based pro-LTTE Tamil terrorist funded and TNA backed NGO called Social Development and Research Organization (SDRO) has demanded the establishment of a separate province for Tamils in Eastern Sri Lanka in case it is not possible to merge the Northern and Eastern Provinces to form a single Tamil-majority Province in line with the 13 Amendment which was a by-product of Indo-Lanka pact signed by UNP government in 1987.

At meeting with the Public Representation Committee on the so called new constitution at Trincomalee SDRO has demanded that it is necessary for the Tamils to have a separate province.

The Northern and Eastern Provinces were temporary merged following the India-Sri Lanka Accord of 1987 to form a single Tamil-majority province. The Muslims opposed it on the grounds that they would lose power, but did not try to annul it. However, following Sinhalese patriots filed a case in the Supreme Court against the merger. In 2006, the court ordered de-linking on the grounds that the way the merger took effected was illegal.

On the question whether the new constitution should be “federal” or “unitary”, the SDRO demanded for Federal power with Land and Police as once former president has promised to them. Also, demanded the direct foreign funds to the Tamil province to develop their own Police force and reconstruction.
