Federalism will lead to division of country – JVP
By Ajith Alahakoon
“It is the JVP that went before the courts and got an order to demerge the two provinces that had been arbitrarily merged after the Indo-Lanka Accord. These two provinces should function separately,” former MP Herath said”.
JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath said that the TNA’s demand for federalism would benefit the parties and candidates playing the communal card at the forthcoming general election.
MP Herath told The Island that his party was opposed to the TNA’s request for a federal solution to the national problem. “The JVP is against federalism. We accept that there should be a solution to the national problem and that the grievances of the Tamil people should be redressed. But, federalism is not that solution. Similarly, remerging of the Northern and Eastern provinces is no solution either. It is the JVP that went before the courts and got an order to demerge the two provinces that had been arbitrarily merged after the Indo-Lanka Accord. These two provinces should function separately,” former MP Herath said.
He said that federalism would lead to the division of the country. “It seems that the TNA’s motive is to increase its votes. But, we know that playing that racial card would lead to disharmony and bloodshed.”
