JHU Ignore Sinhala IDPs in Jaffna
As reported in the Island Newspaper a few days ago, JHU President, Ven. Omalpe Sobitha thero has donated 100 cows to Tamils in Jaffna stating that it is to build goodwill between North and the South.
No doubt that it is a good act and it may result in building goodwill among the Sinhalese and Tamils, in particularly with the Buddhists. But why only to Tamils when there are internally displaced Sinhalese at Navakkuliya living under poverty? After donating the cows to Tamils only basis, thero had visited the Navakkuliya Sinhala village and had said that Ven. thero will try to give about ten Cows to the Sinhala settlement in the future.
As a result of this act, several questions have arisen as to the present aims of the JHU. While all other ethnic based political parties only taking cares their community JHU was created to safe guard the rights of the Sinhala people in general and Buddhists in particular. However, JHU has not made any substantial changes to the Sinhalese especially to the Internally Displaced People (IDP); Sinhalese in North and East two provinces or to the Buddhist temples while all other minority ethnic based political parties doing their best to their community. IDP Sinhalese are suffering with lack of basic facilities from houses to Sinhala education to their children. The present Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya in Jaffna town has been encroached by nearby church and had established new Tamil Christian School within the Sinhala Maha Vidyalaya premises.
Ven. Omalpe Sobithe thero together with JHU hierarchy had voiced the plight of the Navakkuliya Sinhala settlers during the past four years and only voiced but no action so far. Therefore, thero’s failure to donate at least five cows out of 100 to the poor and helpless Sinhala IDPs is questionable?
