Katina Pinkama at Nawakkuliya Buddhist Temple in Jaffna
Nawakkuliya Buddhist temple is a new Buddhist temple established by the Sinhala Ravaya organization in the year 2010 with the help from patriotic expatriates living in the United Kingdom. The temple situated next to the only Sinhala settlement (9 Km from Jaffna city center along A9 Road)) within the Jaffna peninsula consists of Sinhala IDPs displaced in the year 1983. The settlement consists of around 60 families.
Temple’s second Katina Pinkama was successfully concluded on 29th October 2014 after all night Pirith on 28th night. Nearly 40 theros from various parts of the country attended the Pinkama upon the invitation of the temple’s chief thero, Pujya Rathanasiri thero.
The Chief invitee was the Northern Province Governor, who was accompanied by the Northern area commander with other high-ranking SL army officers along with the Police officers from the area.
A squad of about 100 young SL army personnel from the area was in charge of the decorations including building of the Pirith Mandapaya and other huts. This year’s Katina Pinkama was a grand Katina Pinkama and the second one held at the temple.
The main financial contributor for this highly meritorious event as in last year was Sri Lankan expatriates in the Middle East. Sinhala Jathika Peramuna (SJP) coordinated the fund raising and other critical issues to make it a successful event. Ms. Sakunthala, President of the Sinhala Association at Nawakkuliya was in charge of the coordination work for the Pinkama.
At the end of the Pinkama, Chief Thero recited 21 names Sri Lankan expatriates from along with other names who contributed to the event according to the Buddhist rituals.
A large number of Tamils from the adjacent villages also joined the Pinkama,
