Maithree sworn in as 6th President of Sri Lanka
The Sri Lanka President-Elect Maithireepala Sirisena
who won in a thin margin was sworn in as the 6th Executive President of Sri
Lanka on Friday at the Independence Square in Colombo on Friday evening around
6.20 p.m. Later, Ranil Wickremesinghe, current
leader of the opposition of the parliament and the president of the United
National Party took oath as the Prime Minister before the President Maithireepala
Sirisena at the same venue.
Maithireepala Sirisena addressing the event said: “I will discharge my
duties taking into consideration of the future of the future generation. I have
no intention of becoming President for another term”. He thanked UNP, Jathika
Hela Urumaya, Pro-LTTE Tamil National Alliance, separatist Sri Lanka Muslim
Congress and other minority ethnic political parties that had supported him
during the presidential election. He
also thanked the outgoing President Mahinda Rajapakse.
Pro-LTTE TNA Parliamentary Group Leader R. Sampanthan, in a media release demanded
the new President that it was essential to resolve the national question
urgently by full implementing the 13th Amendment and devaluating
more power to the Tamils and SLMC lead Muslims in Northern and Eastern two provinces.
Leaders of TNA and SLMC thanked the voters in the Northern and Eastern
provinces who bargained their votes for separatism.
