Mangala in UK to Bargain with UNHRC for Federal Constitution
Sources reported that Britain is to sponsor a new resolution on Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) at its upcoming session in Geneva. The decision had been communicated to the Council at the organisational meeting for the 34th session of the UNHRC held in Geneva recently.
The UK resolution will look to give some more time to Sri Lanka to address the accountability issue on the war in condition that Sri Lanka to bring separatists federalist constitution before UNHRC session in March 2017. Unconfirmed sources reported that foreign minister pro-federalist and pro-Tamil Mangala Samaraweera in UK to negotiate this deal which is harmful to the Unitary status of the Country.
Ahead of the resolution being tabled, Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera tol address the UNHRC during 34th session. Samaraweera is to brief the council on the latest developments in Sri Lanka during the high level segment of the session on Tuesday February 28.
The 34th session of the UNHRC takes place in Geneva from 27th February to 24th March.
During the session an interactive dialogue will be held on Sri Lanka on March 22.
The United States had sponsored previous resolutions with pro-minority government of Sri Lanka in 2015 but with a change in US Government there is no clear policy yet on how the US will deal issues like with Sri Lanka and on other countries.
