Open Letter to pro-Tamil PM in Canada

Dear Honorable Prime Minister,

Subject: Concerns Regarding the Tamil Genocide Monument and Misrepresentation of Sri Lanka’s History

I am writing to express my deep concern regarding the recent inauguration of the “Tamil Genocide Monument” in Brampton, Canada,
on May 10. The monument claims to commemorate victims of genocide allegedly committed by the Sri Lankan state during the final
phase of the armed conflict.

As a Sri Lankan with firsthand knowledge and experience, I respectfully urge you and your government to consider a more balanced
and verified account of the events that transpired. While it is true that the final stages of the conflict were tragic and complex, it is
also true that the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) was recognized internationally as one of the most dangerous terrorist
organizations. They were responsible for countless atrocities, including suicide bombings, child recruitment, and assassinations
of innocent civilians from all ethnic communities—Sinhalese, Tamil, and Muslim.

During the final phase of the conflict, the Sri Lankan government created “No Fire Zones” to protect civilians. The military also
facilitated the safe passage, food, and medical care for tens of thousands of Tamil civilians. However, the LTTE often used these
civilians as human shields, refusing to let them leave.

It is deeply troubling to see the LTTE being glorified abroad under the guise of memorializing victims, especially when Tamil diaspora
groups continue to raise funds and spread misinformation, creating divisions within Sri Lanka and abroad.

As a Buddhist-majority nation with over 2,600 years of history, Sri Lanka’s Sinhalese people have been guided by the
noble principles of Buddhism, including the Five Precepts (Pañca-sīla), which promote peace, truthfulness, and compassion.

To abstain from killing – Our people are taught to value life. Even during war, our soldiers saved many Tamil civilians.
To abstain from taking what is not given – While corruption exists in every society, it is not the character of our majority.
To abstain from sexual misconduct – Respect for others is fundamental in our teachings.
To abstain from false speech – It is in this spirit that I write to share the truth.
To abstain from intoxicating substances – I have followed this throughout my life.

I have previously written to your former Prime Minister, as well as officials in the UK and India, sharing these concerns. As a former
journalist, and the son of a respected journalist with 45 years of experience, I feel it is my responsibility to speak out against
misinformation and misrepresentation.

I respectfully request that the Canadian government ensure balanced representation of Sri Lanka’s history, and avoid promoting
narratives that glorify violent extremism. We welcome you to visit Sri Lanka and witness firsthand the harmony, culture, and hospitality
of our people—despite the hardships we’ve endured, including the pandemic and recent economic crisis.

Finally, I humbly urge you to reflect on the direction Canada is taking. There are growing concerns among many that extremist elements
may gain undue influence in your institutions.

Thank you for your time and service. May you be guided by truth and compassion in your leadership.

Sincerely,

Jayantha Wedasinghe,,
