Presidential Task Force to look into National Education
A Presidential Task Force has been formed to look into the matters concerning the education sector in the country.
People of Sri Lanka are look forward to see a comprehensive overhaul in education system from primary, secondary to tertiary in view of national interest to safeguard national and heritage values in Sri Lankan context. Currently, whole education system is based on very old outdated syllabuses and technics. The task force shall formulate a national education policy focusing to enhance the morale values of children mind along with the knowledge enhancement.
The task force shall primarily look in to the following aspects of our education system and implement them accordingly;
- address distortion of history from text books grade 1 to 12,
- need for true history of Sri Lanka to be included into history books,
- The teaching of history, Religion, Sinhala and Tamil languages shall be mandatory for all schools including private and international schools,
- Ethics and morale of the life shall be given the prominent place of the education system in order to produce a generation who abide with the law and order of the country and who would make a corruption free society.
- life skills and handiwork programs using materials from own districts shall be included into curriculum,
- The university courses shall be oriented to the requirements of Sri Lankan economy, environment and society,
- Review the cost benefits of the establishment of private universities in order to address the lack of university education for majority of Sri Lankan students.
The Task Force on Education was formed by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa under the powers vested in him by Article 33 of the Constitution, with the objective of addressing the need to continue the nationally important education system without any hindrance in the face of the Coronavirus outbreak.
It is also tasked with modernizing the education system to suit the timely needs of the primary, secondary and tertiary education in the country.
The 26-member Task Force is chaired by Secretary to the Ministry of Higher Education, Technology and Innovations, Mr D.M.A.R.B Dissanayake. Its members include Secretary to the Ministry of Education Mr N.H.M. Chithrananda, Secretary to the Ministry of Skills Development, Employment & Labour Relations Mr D.M.A. Abeygunawardena, Chairman of the University Grants Commission Prof. Sampath Amaratunge.
In addition, the principal of Ananda College in Colombo Mr S.M. Keerthiratne the principal of Visakha Vidyalaya in Colombo Mrs Sandamali Aviruppola and Director of Gateway Group have also been named as members of this Presidential Task Force.
