Ranil to divide the Country
Pro-Federalism and western backed Ranil Wickremesinghe, in his first address to parliament as the prime minister since taking office has aid lawmakers needed to bring a political conclusion to the conflict between government troops and Tamil Tiger rebels that ended in 2009. He further said that the previous government failed to deal with the ethnic issue which run by terrorism and violence.
Wickremesinghe said his government would revive a 1987 constitutional amendment that promised a de facto federal arrangement for the island’s Tamil-dominated northern and eastern two provinces.
“We will implement the 13th amendment within a unitary state,” said Wickremesinghe. Political sources said that it is an illusion to deviate the attention of majority Sinhalese who has opposed to division of the country. They further argue that no 13th amendment can be implemented within a unitary country. Previous Governments reluctant to implement the controversial 13th amendment due to pressure from the Sinhalese population, who saw it as a sell-out the country to the minority community.
The country’s main Tamil political party, pro-LTTE Tamil terrorists the Tamil National Alliance, has backed Ranil during the presidential election has announced that they distanced itself from demands for a separate homeland and said it accepts power-sharing. Majority Sinhalese do not believe such statements made by TNA who once represent LTTE Tamil terrorists to create a separate state in Sri Lanka.
Meanwhile pro-LTTE Tamil terrorists political party called on Tuesday for the new government to resolve the longstanding ethnic conflict that led to the country’s quarter-century civil war.
.”The Tamil question needs to be addressed so as to evolve a permanent, reasonable, workable and durable solution within the framework of a united, undivided Sri Lanka,” Sampanthan said, adding that it would be in the interest of the whole country. TNA leader deliberately mentioned a United Sri Lanka while Ranil Wickramasinghe promising a Unitary Sri Lanka to the majority Sinhalese.
Pro- LTTE TNA has called on the ethnic Sinhalese-dominated government to share power under a federal system.
Nationalistic coalition party of JHU who supported Ranil during the presidential election maintains silence which seems implied JHU supports to the Federalism.
