Singing of national anthem in Tamil challenged in court

The petition filed by three petitioners, challenging the singing of the National Anthem on February 4, 2016 in Tamil, will be re-supported in court on September 1.

Yesterday it was called before Chief Justice K. Sripavan and Justice Eva Wanasundera. It was postponed for September 1.

The petitioners said that the National Anthem had been composed by Ananda Samarakoon in Sinhala language. The change of the masterpiece into another language was a violation of the sovereignty of the people.

The petitioners did not know who authorized the translation, but since the President was the Chief Guest at the ceremony, the President and the Attorney General have been made respondents.

The petitioners are Withanage Sanjeewa Sujith, A. Soysa and Don Premaratne all of Kelaniya.
