Sinhala Associations in UK Reject Anti-Buddhist Rosy

The President of Sinhala Association in the UK, Douglas Wickramaratne has urged President Maithripala Sirisena to appoint a competent career diplomat to London.

As the Sri Lankan mission in London has remained headless since the resignation of Dr. Chris Nonis in October 2014, the top ambassadorial position was offered to anti-Buddhists former State Minister for Child Development Rosy Senanayake, a defeated candidate in the last parliamentary poll.

Referring to this ‘invitation’, Wickramaratne said that he is completely baffled at the games played in the appointment of a High Commissioner to London.

“Over the years, we have had some excellent persons occupying the chair and also sadly completely incompetent political appointees who only brought shame to Sri Lanka”, he recalled.

Chairman, British Sri Lanka Chamber of Commerce, Jayampathi Perera said London is probably the most important foreign mission in Europe for Sri Lanka. With the current  political changes and the new  attitude towards Sri Lanka by the British government, it will  be most advisable to send an individual who can properly establish a friendly, honest relationship with not only the British government but also with the much divided Sri Lankan Diaspora but not a beauty queen who was rejected by the public.

The government should not post another individual who will promote her self-interest and individual commercial ends at the expense of the country’s interest. The person who will be finally selected be a career diplomat, an individual with knowledge of international relations and commerce will be an added advantage for such a strategically important post for Sri Lanka to fight against the LTTE Tamil Terrorist diaspora in the UK.

Sri Lanka needs a High Commissioner with dexterity to fulfil several roles: to engage effectively with the Britain government to uphold and enhance our country’s interests; to maintain a prominent media presence and also to build unity amongst British Sri Lankan communities, fight with LTTE Tamil terrorists Diaspora in the UK and EU.
