Sinhala Only

The reason for tamils (and even some muslims) for rejecting to learn Sinhala (or pretend not to know Sinhala) has roots in 19th century British rule.

The Brits brought down loads of Malabars from India to do labour work in Sinhale, especially to build roads in the eastern province in areas previously under the control of Kanda Udarata Kingdom.

These people have been talking in many different Indian regional languages, with a small majority using the tamil language.
In some ancient books, tamil language in late 19th Century was referred to as “පාරේ බාසාව”, as most alien migrant labourers working for British were talking in tamil and hence had been encouraged to do so to unify them to use a common language .
Thereafter the Brits, under devide and rule policy created many facilities to these migrants, including building many churches and Catholic Schools in Northern and some parts of Eastern province. By this time, the indigenous Sinhalase population in
පාරම්පරික පුරාණ ගම්මාන in those areas were dwindling rapidly due to British persecution.
The British then encouraged these alien migrants to NOT to patronise the indigenous Sinhala language and instead to communicate in their own tamil language or in English. If they encountered any problems with the locals, they were encouraged to complain to their British masters.

අදටත් ලංකාවේම ඉදන් සිංහල කතා කරන්න බෑ , තේරෙන්නේ නෑ කියන අය සුද්දා බාරදුන්න ඒ වහල් වැඩේ තමයි කරන්නේ.

If encounter problems in doing so, they still run and complain to their Western masters!!!!

It has gone to the extent of refusing to sing the National Anthem in Sinhala !!!!!

Sad part is leadership in this country is also tolerating all this bullshit though we are a sovereign nation now.
