Tamils to Boycott Presidential Election
Tamil politicians in Jaffna and other part of the country had decided to boycott presidential election on 8th of January 2015. The press release of Tamil political leaders stated that president Mahinda Rajapaksa is almost open in telling that electing the next president is choosing between China and the USA or Sri Lanka and Anti-Sri Lankan elements. Tamil leaders and political activists in the island are of the opinion that Tamils put in a situation of struggle polity need not worry who succeeds as president. “Tamils should not participate in this election. The pro-LTTE TNA leaders in their decision of supporting Anti-Sri Lankan clan of common candidate of Mr. Sirisena failed in guiding the Tamils in the right way,” said senior politician Mr. Ma’ravan-pulavu K. Sachithananthan, speaking to media in Jaffna. The former Jaffna University academic was addressing along with Ananthy Sasitharan of the NPC and ITAK Youth Wing Leader VS Sivakaran.
in the meantime, four members of Pachchilaip-pa’l’li local council, elected on TULF ticket, have defected to the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) a day after Pro-LTTE TNA’s Parliamentary Group leader R. Sampanthan extended their support to common opposition candidate as they did in 2010 presidential election for Mr. Sarath Fonseka.
Further, a pro-LTTE TNA civic member of Point Pedro Urban Council and two members of Point Pedro Piratheasa Chapai had defected to UPFA. A husband and wife, who defected to the UPFA.
The four civic members who crossed over to the UPFA had been elected through Anandasangaree’s TULF.
