UN Designated Terrorist Fronts Support Maithripala

LTTE fronts overseas that supported violence in Sri Lanka pledged its support for the common candidate Mr Maithripala Sirisena. This includes the Canadian Tamil Congress (CTC), a terrorist entity engaged in propaganda, fundraising and weapons procurement. The CTC is designated as a “terrorist entity” under the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1373.

In a press release published by the CTC, its national spokesperson, David Poopalapillai said.”Over the past few days, Tamil leaders in Sri Lanka, including TNA Leader Mr. Sampanthan, Mr. Mano Ganesan and Mannar Bishop Rayappu Joseph have all urged people to vote in large numbers and we must help strengthen them in their efforts.”

In addition to David Poopalapillai who has been designated under UNSCR 1373, its Executive Director Danton Thurairajah has been a LTTE fund raiser in the US according to the FBI. Together with Poopalapillai, Thurairajah has been at the forefront of working with the UN to investigate allegations of war crimes. Thurairajah said in a CTC press release:

“We urge any community members who wish to testify before the UN investigative team to provide their contact information to CTC. We will compile the list and confidentially provide it directly to the UN investigation team if and when they make this request.” Among the three Canadian Tamils arrested in the US for procuring weapons for the LTTE were members of the Canadian Tamil Congress Sathajhan Sarachandran alias Satha and Sahilal Sabaratnam. The renowned Canadian journalist Stewart Bell wrote in the National Post, “Sarachandran, 31, is the former president of the Tamil Youth Organization’s Toronto chapter, while Sabaratnam, 32, was communications director of the Canadian Tamil Congress, the leading Tamil organization in the country. Thanigasalam, 43, is his brother-in-law.” They serve time in a US prison for attempting to procure weapons including Surface to Air Missiles on US soil.

CTC’s expression of support to common candidate Mr Maithripala Sirisena has raised several questions. Did Mr Sirisena agree to work with the TNA, that recognized the LTTE as the sole representative of the Tamils? Did Mr. Sirisena agree to delist the LTTE as a terrorist group?

Did Mr. Sirisena agree to delist the 14 terrorist fronts including CTC designated as a terror entity?

As CTC continues to promote the revival of separatism in Sri Lanka, the CTC is under the watchful eyes of international security and intelligence services. As they continue to monitor CTC leaders, members and supporters as well as CTC transactions, they are questioning why CTC is supporting Mr Sirisena.
