USAID NED NRI NDI IRI DRL & Sri Lanka’s Parliament

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID),National Democratic Institute (NDI),National Endowment for Democracy (NED), and International Republican Institute (IRI) have actively collaborated with the Parliament of Sri Lanka to enhance democratic governance, strengthen legislative processes, and promote civic engagement.

Collaborations and Initiatives:
• Parliamentary Research Enhancement:
In early 2024, NDI engaged with the Parliamentary Research Division (PRD) and committee staff to bolster their capacity in providing non-partisan, factual, and balanced assessments on critical issues.

• Parliamentary Internship Program:
Launched on March 1, 2023, with support from NDI and USAID, this program offers young professionals and students practical experience in policy development and public service. Selected interns from eight state universities participate in various parliamentary activities, fostering a deeper understanding of legislative processes.

• Parliamentary Engagement: IRI Works with local political leaders to improve decision-making & policy formulation.

• Parliamentary Training – NDI provides capacity-building programs for legislators, helping them improve their oversight functions, public speaking, and policy analysis skills.

• Promoting Transparency: NDI works with Sri Lankan parliamentarians to improve parliamentary transparency by enhancing citizen engagement and promoting open government.

• Strengthening Democratic Governance and Accountability Project (SDGAP):
Implemented by DAI with USAID funding, SDGAP focuses on enhancing public accountability systems, improving policy reform processes, and increasing the participation of women and under-represented groups in Sri Lanka. The project builds upon previous initiatives to strengthen the relationship between government and civil society actors.

• Support for Women’s Political Participation:
USAID promotes women’s political engagement in Sri Lanka. USAID supports women leaders, including the second female Secretary General of the Parliament of Sri Lanka, to enhance their roles in legislative processes.

• Civil Society Advocacy and Resilience:
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor (DRL) has initiated projects to build collective civil society resilience

• Political Party Development – IRI helps develop Sri Lanka’s Political Parties by training & resources

• Promoting Human Rights & Democratic Governance – Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights & Labor (DRL) supports Sri Lanka Parliament in advancing human rights & democratic legislative reforms.

• DRL also works with civil societies
