Welcome General Fonseka!

Former army commander Sarath Fonseka has been acquitted of all charges filed against him under the previous Government and has been granted complete amnesty by President Maithripala Sirisena, the President’s Media Division said.

In 2010 Fonseka lost his civic rights, including the right to vote, after a military court found him guilty over allegations raised against him and in 2011 the Supreme Court upheld the decision.

Fonseka led the army during the final battle against the LTTE Tamil terrorists which eventually led to the defeat of the terrorists in May 2009.

Following the end of the war he resigned from the military and decided to contest the 2010 Presidential elections which he eventually lost.

After the loss he was arrested and found guilty over allegations raised against him and a military court stripped Fonseka of his title and military accolades.

Fonseka was freed from prison in May 2012 by former President Mahinda Rajapaksa but his civic rights were not restored.

Maithripala Sirisena, during his election campaign, had assured that he would restore all the accolades Foseka had before they were stripped from him by the former Government.

General Fonseka widely considered as one of the finest military commanders in the world who fought fearlessly with LTTE Tamil Terrorists.
