Why is Thileepan, who took terrorism, made a hero in Nallur?
A new bronze monument has been installed in Nallur recently to commemorate Thileepan, who died while being on a fast without even taking pineapple and water from September 15, 1987 to September 26, demanding that Sinhala colonization in the North be stopped and that the Indian government should hold talks with the LTTE organization. Named as the “Statue of Lieutenant Colonel Thileepan”, through this, an attempt has been made to portray him as a Tamil freedom fighter who sacrificed his life for nearly four decades.
Rasiah Parthipan alias Thileepan, who was a powerful activist of the LTTE organization, started this deadly fast on September 15, 1987 near the Nallur Kandaswamy temple based on five demands.
As far as is known, Thileepan the terrorist was suffering from a severe cancer at his last moment and the terrorist leader Prabhakaran forcibly used him for this fast during his final days.
The commemoration ceremony this time also started at the auspicious time of 9.45 a.m. when the fast began. Near his new monument in Nallur, the commemorative lamp was lit by veteran militant Basheer Kakka, who is the father of a person who died on the battlefield, and then the participants paid tribute by garlanding it.
The five demands put forward by Thileepan:
The five demands he put forward to draw the attention of the Indian government after the Indo-Lanka Accord are as follows:
1. The Sinhala government’s forces must be withdrawn from areas where Tamil people live.
2. Sinhala colonization taking place under the guise of rehabilitation must be stopped until an interim government is established in the provinces where Tamil people live.
3. The establishment of new Sinhala police stations and camps in the North-Eastern provinces must be stopped.
4. All political prisoners detained under the Prevention of Terrorism Act must be released.
5. The Sri Lankan Army and Police battalions stationed in schools in Tamil areas must be withdrawn, and the weapons given to the home guards must be handed back under the supervision of the Indian Army.
On September 20, 1987, Thileepan, addressing the nation for the last time, said, “Brothers, in a few more days I will die.. But with my death, thousands of freedom fighters who fight for your rights will be born…”
Historical background and current situation:
The original memorial tower built at the place where Thileepan held his fast was destroyed by the Sri Lankan Army after the recapture of Jaffna in 1996. Later, although it was secretly rebuilt during the ceasefire period, it was destroyed for the second time during the 4th Eelam War in 2007. By 2012, the remaining parts of it had also been completely removed.
But today, the attempt by certain separatists and those who join hands with them to socialize Thileepan as a hero has still not ended. This is an unfortunate context common not only to the North but also to the South.
Serious questions arising:
How does a person who led an ideological and armed terrorist war for the division of a country become a hero?
Who gave him the military rank of “Lieutenant Colonel”? Is it a rank given by a recognized army of a country? No. It is a name given by Prabhakaran, the leader of the LTTE terrorist organization, which used inhuman war tactics to divide Sri Lanka and was later defeated at Vellamullivaikal.
Who gave permission to build and open such a bronze monument in Nallur with the military rank of a separatist terrorist organization banned by state law? Those responsible for it must be immediately revealed to the country.
This is a great disrespect to the true war heroes who sacrificed their lives to completely end the separatist LTTE terrorism that lasted for more than three decades. Today we live freely because of those brave war heroes. But in an environment where such statues are not created and no honor is shown for them, every citizen must once again engage in self-criticism as to how space was created to open statues of people like “Lieutenant Colonel Thileepan”.
