Government Failed to Give Due Respect to the Thai Deputy Prime Minister
Thai Deputy Prime Minister Ms. Suphajee Suthumpun did not come to Sri Lanka just for an ordinary visit. She brought the Kotha Vahanse with the Chuda Manikya for the meritorious festival of enshrining the pinnacle of the historic Mihindu Maha Seya, as a venerable symbol of the Theravada Buddhist brotherhood that exists between our country and Thailand.
Failure to accord proper diplomatic reception to a Deputy Prime Minister of a fellow Buddhist country who came to participate in such a noble meritorious act is a display to the world of the uncivilized nature of the rulers of this government.
Thai diplomats point out that this has raised a question about the diplomatic immaturity of the JVP Sri Lankan government.
Think, when such a venerable contribution is received from a fellow Buddhist country that has a special connection to the history of the Buddha Sasana in our country, for the meritorious act of enshrining the pinnacle of our historic Chaitya, what an anti-Buddhist government it must be to not give due respect to the state representative who comes for it.
Mihindu Maha Seya is not just a mere building. It is a special symbol of our Buddhist heritage and of the religious history nourished by the arrival of Arahant Mahinda Thero in Lanka. If the importance of the arrival of the Thai Deputy Prime Minister who contributed to the meritorious festival of enshrining the pinnacle of that sacred place cannot be understood, how can our heritage be linked with international relations?
Protecting the honor of our country is not just about making speeches on stages. Acting responsibly regarding the country’s history, religious heritage and international relations is also part of it.
We must pay respect to the Buddhist brotherhood shown by Ms. Suphajee Suthumpun by contributing to the meritorious festival of enshrining the pinnacle of Mihindu Maha Seya. And as Buddhists, we should be ashamed of the questions that have arisen about the way our country’s diplomatic affairs were conducted on such an occasion.
The honor of the country is not protected by the talk of the rulers, but by respecting our heritage and maintaining relations with brotherly countries with value…
