Prez says prime responsibility to protect Buddhists who made sacrifices to make him 1st Citizen
Upon being bestowed with the honorary title of “Sri Lankadheeshwara Padma Vibhushana” by the Kotte Sri Kalyani Samagri Dharma Maha Sangha Sabha yesterday (02), President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in his speech said that he will work towards protecting Buddhist heritage.
“When I was sworn in as the President in front of the Ruwanweli Maha Seya, I said that I am a President who was elected by the votes of a majority of the Sinhalese. I firmly believe that protecting the heritage of Buddhists who made immense sacrifices for me to become the first citizen is my prime responsibility. I will work towards that. I must mention that because of the Buddhist teachings that were bestowed upon me, an environment has been created for my fellow citizens of other religions to enjoy freedom,” he said.
The President went on to say that the Government was able to successfully contain the Covid-19 pandemic that prevailed for two years.
“Even though I was insulted by some groups due to several social and economic issues caused in the country due to the pandemic, I have the strength to handle those insults with patience. It is doubtful whether those who insult me have served the country as much as I have, I am ready to overcome challenges and start a journey to fulfil the expectations of the people,” he said.
President Rajapaksa finally said that if decisions have to be made on behalf of the country, he would do so responsibly, pledging his word of assurance to the Maha Sangha.
