Ranil Refused to Protect Rana Viruvo

Federalist  mind set Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe told Thursday’s JR Jayawardana commemoration that the passage of Indemnity Bill would be disadvantageous to Sri Lanka as the purpose of such legislation would be to pardon those who had committed crimes and he rejected to such a bill in Sri Lanka. There are similar bill in US and many other countries to protect their soldiers.

Mena while,tThe National Freedom Front (NFF) plans to launch a special project next week to rally the masses against the UN led move to haul former President Mahinda Rajapaksa as well as those who had commanded war winning troops before a hybrid court.

NFF leader Wimal Weerawansa told that the party would hold a series of seminars commencing Sept 27. Colombo District MP said that a people’s movement was necessary to thwart the UN operation meant to appease the LTTE rump as well as an influential section of the Tamil Diaspora. The NFF parliamentary group consists of five members.

Weerawansa acknowledged that his party was yet to reach an understanding with like-minded political parties and groups regarding a strategy to counter the looming threat.

Asked whether he accepted Pivithuru Hela Urumaya MP Udaya Gammanpila’s proposal for the passage of an  Indemnity Bill meant to pardon those who had committed battlefield atrocities, MP Weerawansa said that he wanted to examine the proposal. MP Gammanpila told  that it would be the responsibility of parliament to ensure the freedom of those who had risked their lives to eradicate terrorism.

Opposition sources told that the NFF, MEP MP Dinesh Gunawardena, Democratic Left Party MP Vasudeva Nanayakkara, MP Udaya Gammanpila and CP MP Chandrasiri Gajadeera had yet to reach an understanding with the group of SLFPers sitting in the Opposition. They said that efforts to shape an Opposition alliance remained at an initial stage due to differences.
