UNHRC Violated UN Charter by Interfering Internal Affairs of Sri Lanka, Co-President of GSLF
The Global Sri Lankan Forum, GSLF accused UNHRC for violating international charters and interfering in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation of Sri Lanka to promote Tamil separatism based terrorism to create a Federal State to form Tamil eelam in Sri Lanka. The Co-President of GSLF, Mr. Eric Makawitage addressed the UNHRC on 18th Sep. 2018 and raised serious concern on the double stand by UNHRC on the Sri Lankan matter.
The full text of the speech delivered by Mr. Makawitage at the 32nd UNHRC session in Geneva on 18th Sep 2017 is as follows;
Mr. President,
Today we speak about Promotion and Protection of all human rights. As you know, Sri Lankan forces defeated the most ruthless terrorist organization in the world, the LTTE, and protected the human rights the entire nation.
The LTTE resorted to terrorism to establish a separate state in the North claiming that the Tamil people are discriminated against by the majority Sinhalese.
This is a lie because more than 50% of the Tamil population live amongst the Sinhalese in the South. And they dominate the trade, vital business ventures hold top government positions and even important cabinet portfolios.
It was the previous government administration which gave the Tamils in the North their political rights by holding elections after several years.
After the war, the IDP’s were resettled, mines were cleared, damaged schools, hospitals and public facilities were renovated.
Current GDP Growth rate in North is 22% in compaison to 7% in the rest of the country.
However the Counsil has passed a resolution charging us with war crimes and you want us to even change our Constitution and demanding to reduce the strength of our armed forces.
By doing so the Council has violated the UN Charter by interfering in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation.
Human rights should not be used as a lethal weapon to pressurize for constitutional changes and destroy the unitary status of sovereign States, such as Sri Lanka.
Although our government has co-sponsored the resolution, basically due to the pressure from the Tamil Diaspora,
We request the Council to re-examine the OISL report.
Thank you Mr. President
